I’ve recently dedicated myself to learning the names of trees. Before I never thought it made much of a difference, but the beauty of their names compelled me.

Now when I walk down the sidewalk in the evenings, they step toward me, each one distinct. The words come to mind like the names of friends--dogwood, forsythia, hawthorn, crabapple, redbud, weeping cherry.
