Bio: Pia Ghosh Roy grew up in India, and now lives in Cambridge, England, with her husband and young daughter. She has worked in advertising as a copywriter in Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and London. Her short stories have appeared in journals in the UK and US. She has been longlisted for the 2015 Bath Short Story Award, and commended at the 2014 Words & Women Competition. Her works appears in The Huffington Post. She's currently working on her first novel. The Smell of Old Books
There was a row of shops where the flyovers now swirl and swoop. The shops were cubes of tin and plywood on a strip of pavement in heaving, humid Calcutta. They stood under gulmohar trees; fire-red petals with shade as cool as coconut water. In this shade, on low wicker stools, sat the men who owned these shops, playing cards, passing time. They were gatekeepers of old books.
